What Are the Symptoms of Striae?

Striae, or stretch marks, look like long, white scars on the skin. New stretch marks often look red or even purple, but over time, stretch marks become white.

Most of the time, stretch marks don’t hurt, but if they are caused by stretching skin from gaining weight or growing quickly, the skin may feel a little sore to the touch. However, when stretch marks have turned white, they should no longer cause pain.

Stretch marks are often found on the stomach, sides, or back, but sometimes affect the arms and legs. While you might notice stretch marks if you lose weight quickly, it’s likely they were caused when you gained the weight and are just more noticeable now.

Stretch marks in women and men:

  • Indented lines that look like stripes or bands on the surface of the skin
  • May appear as pink, red, or purple streaks in the beginning of their formation
  • Sore initially, and may appear red or purple
  • Eventually turn white and look similar to scars

Where do striae appear on the body?

Stretch marks can appear in many places. You might see them on the thighs, back, butt, and stomach. Sometimes, they appear on the arms, especially the biceps, and can be seen on the shoulders and armpits. They can also be visible on the hips and inner thighs, stretching down to the knees.

The most commonly affected areas on the body:

Back

Thighs

Stomach

Arms

Buttocks

    FAQs

    What are stretch marks?

Stretch marks, also known by the medical term striae distensae, are long scars on the skin that resemble streaks or lines. They are most often found on the abdomen but can also be seen on the back, legs, and arms. They’re caused when the skin is abruptly stretched or expanded, usually during times of growth or weight gain. New stretch marks look pink, red, or even purple, while older stretch marks look white in color.

It’s been thought that stretch marks are permanent, but new advances in aesthetic science are proving that the look of stretch marks can be lessened or even removed.

    What causes stretch marks?

When the skin is abruptly stretched, it causes tears below the surface (in the dermis) that are large and difficult for the body to heal at a quick enough pace, resulting in scar formation. That’s when stretch marks appear. Stretch marks are also genetic — you may have a predisposition to developing striae.

People who have Ehlers-Danlos syndrome may be more likely to develop stretch marks because the skin is more fragile. When people lose weight, stretch marks might also become more visible, however it’s likely the stretch marks were formed during the weight gain.

Thin people can also develop stretch marks — they can be caused by skin stretching from exercise and ‘bulking up,’ from growth spurts, or during pregnancy.

    Who typically gets stretch marks?

Stretch marks are normal and common, and most people experience stretch marks at some time in their life. Anyone – male or female – can get stretch marks. They are commonly developed during puberty when teenagers grow quickly but often fade in the next few years.

They can develop on any body, but are more visible on dark or black skin than on white skin due to their eventual silvery white hue.

Bodybuilders develop stretch marks from working out and experiencing quick muscle expansion.

Overweight people may develop stretch marks during periods of weight gain.

Stretch marks can appear on boys or girls.

    Why do stretch marks itch?

Stretch marks develop due to tears in the skin. The body tries to heal the tears and scars develop. When the skin is healing, whether it’s a tear, cut, scar, or something else, it’s common for it to feel itchy. It’s just a nerve response to the healing and not something to worry about.

What makes my rosacea worse or spread?

Stretch mark treatment can take some time, but it depends on the severity of your scars. Depending on the treatment you choose, it can take 3 to 12 months to see the full results.

You’ll likely notice some fading of your stretch marks after each session, but the effects are cumulative and the results will become more prominent as you progress through your treatment plan.

Does it hurt to get rid of stretch marks?

It can be a little bit painful to get rid of stretch marks. But at Novuskin, we make sure your treatments are manageable. If necessary, we use topical anesthetic to minimize the pain and make sure it’s comfortable for you.

    Recovery Time

You can generally expect to return to your normal activities fairly quickly, but in the first 24-48 hours of a laser treatment for stretch marks, you may find your skin is red and sensitive, and you might be slightly swollen. It’s also possible that your skin may peel in the first week following treatment.

If you elect for Venus Viva treatments, you may feel slightly red after your treatment, a bit like having a sunburn. This usually fades within a few hours to a day. You should be able to immediately return to your usual activities.

Is stretch mark laser treatment safe? What are the side effects and contraindications?

The Frax Laser is a safe and effective skin resurfacing laser. If you are a good candidate for treatment, you will find the laser can provide excellent results for anti aging, reducing hyperpigmentation, and smoothing of scars and stretch marks while also generally improving the tone and texture of your skin.

If you have darker skin, Frax Laser may not be a suitable treatment for you. Frax Laser may leave areas of dark pigmentation on your skin. Speak to your aesthetician for a full recommendation.

    Side Effects

Frax Laser may cause redness and swelling on the treatment site. Generally, people experience a sunburn-like sensation for a few hours to a few days following their treatment. In some cases, there may be mild peeling of the skin. If so, it’s best to allow the skin to fully heal on its own.

    Contraindications

It may be best to avoid Frax Laser if you:

    • Have taken Accutane in the months leading up to your treatment
    • Have a weak immune system or any condition that inhibits clotting or healing
    • Tend to easily form scars
    • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
    • Have darker than a Fitzpatrick Type V skin tone
